February 2021 Newsletter: A Labour of Love

It’s Valentine’s Day, which means it’s time to show our love. In recent years, psychologists have delved into the world of “love languages”, exposing the different ways we are able to transmit and receive l’amour. However, most experts on this topic fail to acknowledge my preferred language of love: FOOD.

When I love someone, beit my partner Steve, my son Aaron or any of the wonderful friends or colleagues that surround me, I want them to eat well. I think I come by this trait honesty. You see, my mother was an amazing cook. She was a strong believer that food must be prepared with love. According to her, the food tasted far better that way. She had an incredible ability to de/reconstruct "restaurant" dishes so she could make them herself. Feeding ten kids at a restaurant gets pretty expensive quickly, so she had a strong incentive to learn how to reproduce those recipes at home.

When my husband Steve first met my mom, he was in awe of her cooking. His favourite were the hot chapatis that she served while he ate. She believed that you must serve them hot and fresh. I also remember her telling me that when her chapatis fluffed really high, she knew that her army of kids were hungry.

Regardless of the love you choose to celebrate this Valentine’s Day, I encourage you to show your care with an unforgettable meal. Cooking takes time and skill, and yes, a dash or two of love, and I hope you both will enjoy the experience.

Why do we indulge in chocolate on Valentine’s Day? Yes - this seems like a natural pairing, but how long have humans reached for this sensuous treat when feeling romantic? Does chocolate really have aphrodisiac powers? We explore the relationship between chocolate and this sweet holiday on our blog.

Looking for chocolatey gifts to send your hubby at home or in office? We have you covered. Chocolate lovers will delight in our Valentine's Day gift boxes. We at Green & Green indulge in chocolate products daily (it’s good for you, right?) so we think very carefully about the best local and import products to feature in each gift. The Chinese New Year is upon us once again! Even though covid protocol will change the way this holiday is celebrated, the gift-giving tradition will persevere. Keep these tip in mind before giving or receiving gifts from Chinese friends:
  • Red, Yellow and Gold coloured wrapping is considered good etiquette, as these are the traditional colours of prosperity. Avoid colours like black, blue and white, which are associated with funerals and death.
  • Do not open a gift you receive in front of the giver. It is customary in Chinese tradition to open the gift in private.
  • When giving or receiving a gift, it is considered polite to present the item with two hands. Make sure your hands are freshly washed or sanitized! This etiquette extends to the practice of exchanging funds or business cards.
