Father’s Day

June 17, 2010

This Father’s Day, my husband & I get to celebrate it with a very special person and friend, Dr Arun Verma. About 20 years ago,

Arun was thrilled when he was accepted into the University of British Columbia’s medical school. It was a step towards fulfilling his dream of being a medical doctor. However less than a month later, his whole world changed. A car accident left Arun a quadriplegic.

Despite the serious setback, Arun was not disheartened, nor discouraged. He accepted his situation and changed the course of his life. With his severe disability, Arun knew that he would have to give up his dream of being a doctor. He went back to UBC to do his Masters and then worked towards a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences. He now lectures and researches at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC.

Three years ago, Arun married a beautiful lady and, on April 5th this year, I was there to help him and his wife bring their 1st child into this world!

What fascinates and inspires me most about Arun is his enthusiasm for anything and everything. He speaks of his active past when he used to play basketball, ski, hike and bike with much pleasure and not regret. He has the ability to make the best of each moment and situation. He exclaims he has the best life, the most beautiful and loving wife, the best job teaching at UBC and like any father, shows great pride in his new daughter, Anya. Arun offers all of us an important life lesson: enjoy the moment and make the best of what life gives you.

So this Father’s Day is dedicated to Arun and to all fathers who rise above the storm to see the sunshine. Happy Father’s Day Arun!

Sincerely,

Let’s Celebrate Father’s Day!

Father’s Day is a day honoring fathers and celebrating paternal bonds, and the influence of fathers in society. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in many countries around the world. While Father’s Day may not be as popular and celebrated as Mother’s Day, it is a wonderful way to recognize that special man in your life. Here are some ways to celebrate Father’s Day:

1) Forget the ties, socks and belts that automatically come to mind. Instead, ask yourself what he is really into. If it’s music, how about the latest best-selling novel of his favorite author, or the newly remastered CD of The Rolling Stones? If he is into art, then a piece he’s been admiring at the local gallery could be another great option.

2) As they say, the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Pamper him with what he enjoys most – whether it is steak, sushi or a home-cooked meal – and make it a memorable meal.

3)
Give him the gift of your time. Pick an activity that both of you can enjoy together. A cooking class, a language lesson, mastering tai-chi…pick up on his interest and sign up for it.

4) Start collecting his old and new photos. Call aunts and uncles who may be hanging on to some of his pictures. Take him out one weekend and start taking some pictures of the two of you together. He will surely appreciate the book of memories you put together.

5) Honor your father’s memory if he has passed on. Send a donation to his favorite charity, or volunteer to do something for a cause that he used to support.

Remember, Father’s Day need not be limited to your biological Dad. You can always do something nice for all the father figures in your life – your grandfather, stepfather, uncles, godfathers, older brothers or male friends.
