November Newsletter: Word of Caution and Month of Transition

November marks the end of autumn and the onset of winter. While the season doesn't officially end until December 21st, the cooler, wetter, and darker days make it feel as though winter is already upon us. With shorter daylight hours, we face dim mornings and evenings, cloudy skies, and brisk temperatures. Let’s embrace November as a month of preparation and intentional transitions.

1) Safety First: Be Mindful and Visible
As I walked down a busy street recently, I noticed many people wearing dark clothing, heads down, absorbed in their phones—creating a potentially dangerous situation. In low visibility, wearing reflective or bright clothing can make all the difference, and remaining alert is crucial. Let's prioritize safety, stepping up our awareness for ourselves and those around us.

2) Stay Active and Relieve Stress
Exercise is an invaluable tool to lift spirits, reduce stress, and improve sleep. Whether it’s a brisk walk, yoga, or stretching exercises, movement is essential to feeling good. A home spa setup or even a spa visit can enhance relaxation—candles, music, and a warm bath work wonders. Taking time for yourself can transform a gloomy day into a refreshing experience.

3) Embrace Diwali’s Spirit
With Diwali, the Festival of Lights, continuing into November, it’s the perfect time to begin holiday preparations. Diwali’s emphasis on cleanliness and renewal can be applied as we ready our homes and spaces, setting the stage for the holidays with a clean and welcoming atmosphere.

4) Strengthen Community Connections
As hybrid work changes our routines, it's easy to feel isolated. Make an extra effort to connect with colleagues, neighbors, and family members. Checking in with friends or greeting someone with a warm hello can brighten both their day and yours. Honor your promises and set boundaries to nurture relationships that bring happiness and harmony to your life.

5) Enjoy Guilt-Free Pleasures
Make time for activities that bring joy—read a book, watch a movie, or bake a comforting treat. Consider sharing your baked goods with a neighbor, coworker, or friend; your small act of kindness will be appreciated and lift everyone’s spirits. Reflect on your blessings with gratitude journaling, and if you enjoy cooking, try out a new recipe or prepare a cherished comfort food.

6) Reflect and Meditate
November is also a good time to pause and reflect. The Hawaiian prayer, Ho’oponopono, is a beautiful way to let go and embrace gratitude:
I am sorry.
Please forgive me.
Thank you.
I love you.

7) Embrace Small Steps
Tackling tasks, no matter how small, is powerful. As James Clear shares in Atomic Habits: “One is infinitely better than zero.” Taking even a single step towards a goal, whether it’s a one-minute meditation or a quick task, is progress and brings you closer to where you want to be.

8) Root for a Team and Share in Cheer
For us, November is synonymous with hockey season and cheering for the Canucks. Celebrate small victories and root for your team—Go Canucks Go!

As we navigate this month of transition, let’s embrace each day with safety, connection, and joy. Happy November!

One more thing: Wabi-Sabi
As one of my colleagues was doing the New York Times crossword this morning (the “mini crossword” that accompanies Wordle, not the “real” one) she came across the words Wabi Sabi.

Not knowing what it meant, she looked it up – and Google to the rescue -- found the following:

The concept of wabi-sabi is indeed a beautiful reminder to embrace imperfection, impermanence, and simplicity in our lives.
This philosophy, rooted in Japanese aesthetics, invites us to find beauty in natural flaws, like the cracks in pottery or the aging of wood. It aligns closely with mindfulness, as it urges an appreciation of the transient nature of life and a focus on the present moment.

With the holiday season approaching, this perspective can be particularly meaningful. In a world often fixated on perfection, embracing wabi-sabi allows us to see value in the unique and unexpected, whether in relationships, traditions, or physical objects. Imagine gifting items that embody this sentiment, such as handcrafted or naturally imperfect items, which offer a warm, personal touch—a reminder that life’s richness is in its quirks and authenticity.

Enjoy this thought as you savor the simplicity and beauty of the holiday season!

Tackle Laughter Padding & Prepare for the Holidays Understanding Laughter Padding and Its Impact

“Laughter padding”—filling conversations with chuckles to ease tension—is a common habit, but it can sometimes undermine your professional image. According to experts, laughter padding can unintentionally convey insecurity or nervousness, affecting how others perceive you. To break the habit, practice speaking confidently without extra laughter, particularly in professional settings where clear, direct communication is vital.
