June is here and if you know me at all, you know this is my favourite month.

The trails are calling. The patios are open. The days stretch long into the evening and something in the air makes everything feel possible.

But this June is different from any I have experienced in my thirty-plus years of calling Vancouver home.

The world is coming to our city. Matches begin June 11 and run through July 7, with seven games at BC Place, including two Canadian national team games. Hundreds of thousands of people from every corner of the globe are about to discover what we already know.

Where to Watch the Games - For Free

You don't need a ticket to BC Place to be part of this summer. Here are the best free options across the city.

FIFA Fan Festival at Hastings Park (PNE)

The official hub. Free general admission. Live screenings of 70+ matches on massive screens, 100+ hours of live music, food vendors, and interactive experiences for all ages. Runs June 11 to July 19. Take transit - parking is very limited. 2901 E. Hastings St., Vancouver.

Granville Island Watch Party

Up to 1,000 seats on a 24-foot screen with DJs, food trucks, and live music. Free entry. June 11 to July 19. Take the False Creek Ferry - it is part of the experience.

Granville Street Pedestrian Zone

Five blocks of Granville Street between Georgia and Davie close to traffic and come alive as a public zone for the full tournament. June 11 to July 20.

Tip: For any venue, arrive at least 90 minutes early on match days. This city is going to be alive in a way none of us have ever seen.

Get Outside - June is Vancouver's Best Kept Secret

June is the sweet spot before the summer crowds hit. Early morning, the fog lifts off the water and the seawall feels like it belongs to you.

But do not stop at the seawall. I love walking inside the Stanley Park forest. The old growth, the quiet, the way it feels completely removed from the city. A friend recently took me on an adventure through the interior trails and I discovered the park has a proper hill workout hiding in there. Most people never leave the seawall and have no idea what they are missing.
