June Reflections: Honoring Others and Yourself

A Father's Day Reflection on Living with Love, Respect, and Intentionality

June is here—one of my favorite times of the year. The promise of barbecues, ocean swims, hiking trails, and perfect golf weather fills me with anticipation. But this June, as Father's Day approaches on June 15th, I find myself reflecting on something deeper.

Whenever I see my friend George Frankel, I'm struck by his kind and caring demeanor. This retired restaurateur shows respect and love for all, believing that everyone deserves love and respect as a birthright—though he acknowledges that some people don't receive this fundamental gift.

"When we see that and experience that," George says, "we should pass it on to others. It's an honorable trait." His philosophy has become my inspiration for showing up more intentionally this June.

The Foundation of Honor

George exemplifies what it means to live honorably. As a grandfather, he makes time for each grandchild individually, celebrating how each one is thriving. This approach extends to everyone he encounters—he leads with his heart consistently.

From George's example, I've learned that honoring others can be beautifully simple:

• Start with a smile - the most accessible form of respect

• Set loving boundaries - even around divisive topics like politics

• Make time for what matters - give people your full attention

• Celebrate others' growth - notice and speak the good you see

• Be consistent - show up the same way for everyone

Bringing Honor to Summer Gatherings

As June social calendars fill up, George's philosophy offers a blueprint for being memorable for the right reasons.

Office Summer Parties

Show up with genuine interest in others, engage with colleagues at all levels, and express gratitude to organizers. Your etiquette matters—these events shape lasting professional relationships.

Home Gatherings

When invited into someone's personal space, honor that trust. Bring something meaningful, help without being asked, participate without dominating, and follow up with personal gratitude.

Honoring Through How We Present Ourselves

George has taught me that our external presentation reflects internal respect—for ourselves, others, and the situations we enter. "You only get one chance to make a first impression," and how we show up communicates our values.

For professional presence this summer, maintain standards even in casual atmospheres. Take cues from senior management while aiming one step above your current role. Choose polished, well-fitted clothing appropriate for your workplace. Pay attention to details like clean shoes and pressed shirts.

If you're in leadership, your presentation sets the team's tone. Even if jeans are the norm, pair yours with a collared shirt. As someone once told me, "Dress like the organ grinder, not the monkey."

The Joy of June Living

June's simple pleasures—grilling, hiking, swimming, golfing—become richer when approached with George's spirit of intentional gratitude and genuine connection. A barbecue becomes more than a meal when everyone feels welcomed. These shared experiences gain meaning when we show up fully present and focused on making others feel valued.

Living the Legacy

As Father's Day approaches, I think about father figures who have shaped us and the example we're setting. George demonstrates that true leadership is modeling the kind of person others can look up to and learn from—not through grand gestures, but through the daily choice to treat everyone as deserving of love and respect.

This June, I'm challenging myself to be more like George. To start conversations with genuine smiles, make time for what truly matters, and bring love and respect into every interaction.

Because as George Frankel has shown me, love and respect really are everyone's birthright. And when we live like we believe it, we change not just our own experience of June, but everyone else's too.
