Groundhog Day – February 2nd
Jan 29, 2013
Groundhog Day
February 2 is Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania (and all over the States). In case you don’t know, if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow on that day and retreats back into his burrow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If it’s overcast and he doesn’t see his shadow, he’ll stay out and there will be an early spring.
Have you ever seen the movie Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell? It’s easily one of his best movies ever. Bill Murray plays Phil Connors, a TV broadcaster sent with his producer (Andie MacDowell) and cameraman (Chris Elliot) to cover the emergence of the Punxsutawney Phil from his burrow. They are caught in a blizzard and forced to stay in the town overnight. Except – it’s not just overnight for Connors; he is caught in a time loop and repeats the day over and over and over again until he finally learns a valuable life lesson. It’s not only a feel-good movie with a happy ending, it is also an important morality tale. Rent the movie, watch it with your loved ones, and then have a conversation about what you could/should/would do differently if you were caught in a time trap like Phil Connors.
In the meantime, we’ll just hope that it’s rainy on February 2nd in Punxsutawney, PA, eh!
