July 2019 Newsletter

Take on July with Gusto!

Named after the famed Roman General Julius Caesar, July is the warmest month on average in the Northern Hemisphere. In Canada, July is the much beloved month where the kids are on summer vacation, the sun is high in the sky, and adventures beckon you into the wild. At Green & Green, we are taking advantage of heat and long days and venturing outdoors for some expeditions!

Benefits of Cycling

It seems like Vancouverites cycle in any weather. If it’s sunny, snowing or raining (and let’s face it…it’s usually raining) you’ll see intrepid peddlists on the road.

Cycling is a wonderful way to get some exercise in. It has many health benefits, while being cheap, low-impact and an environmentally friendly way to get around town. Cycling uses all of the major muscle groups, and is also an excellent way to build cardiovascular stamina. It’s an easy skill to learn, and doesn’t require a high level of physical skill.

In Vancouver, we are lucky to have tons of infrastructure in place to encourage cyclists to ride instead of drive. Bike lanes and special traffic signals for cyclists ensure their safe and convenient passage across the city.

Jump on the bandwagon (or rather…jump on your bicycle) and join the growing number of people who chose to pedal to their destination rather than drive.

Holiday Corner: Asalha Puja

This year, Asalha Puja falls on July 16. This holiday is an extremely important festival across many strains of Buddhist religion, as it commemorates Buddha’s first sermon after enlightenment. In this famous sermon, Buddha outlines the four noble truths, which are at the core of Buddhist traditions. The four noble truths are: there is suffering, suffering is caused by attachment, there is a plane beyond attachment, and the way to that plane is the Noble Eightfold Path. The opportunity to reflect on this teaching makes Asalha Puja one of the religion’s most important celebrations and offers lessons to everybody, regardless of your religious identity.

ip for this summer:

If you are invited to someone's home for a BBQ or summer party, your thoughtfulness will go a long way when you bring a gift for the hostess. This West Coast themed basket, stuffed with local goodies and packaged in a beautiful First Nations Potlatch bowl is a thoughtful and creative gift.

Have a brilliant July!

Go forth, my friends, and get a little dirty. Do something outside of your comfort zone and get your daily dose of vitamin D. I'll see you under the sun!

All my very best,
