Month of Giving - October Newsletter
During this pandemic, we have all had to make difficult decisions about who are able to keep within our “bubble" and how we can interact with them safely. Instead of viewing these limitations as an inconvenience, take this opportunity to organize intimate gathering and conduct meaningful conversations with those you love best.
I like to plan activities with specific, fun goals. For example, you could try to recreate the margarita recipe from the resort you visited last year! It will also be valuable to approach conversations with some planned topics. What questions can I post to the group that will provide fertile ground for stimulating conversation? For tips on how to conduct valuable conversations, see our blog post The Art of Conversation .
Spending lots of time with loves ones is a wonderful gift. Use this time to get to know new sides of each other’s personalities, cultivate new hobbies and interests, and plan activities that you can look forward to. Enjoy October, friends!
Oktoberfest began over 200 years ago to celebrate a wedding of two Barvarian monarchs, but this party has become an annual tradition. It originated in Munich but has become a major feature of Bavarian culture and is celebrated in communities across Germany and the world. Though many of the festivities were cancelled this year due to Covid-19, we would like to celebrate Oktoberfest by honouring our favourite BC brewery.
Dageraad Brewery proudly upholds the traditional of Belgiun beer making while putting a local twist on their product. We love visiting their tasting room to sample delicious, complex beers in warm ambiance. Check out their beer for a special, local treat this October.
Choosing the best colours for branded merchandise is an important decision. The hues, palettes and shades we select to represent our brand makes a big impact. Don't feel blue, because S&S Canada's colour guide provides visually stimulating colour advice. The guide takes you through the history of colour in fashion; learn about the colour trends of each decade and current colour fads to guide your next big design decision. Check it out here.
Did you know that Canadian Thanksgiving predates the American version by almost 50 years? But that’s not the only thing that distinguishes our harvest festival from our southern neighbours. Canadians have many wacky food traditions for the holiday. This is how thanksgiving dinner is served across our nation:
In Quebec, Thanksgiving is called Ction de Grace. There, it is customary to serve smoked mackerel. Either the smoked fish is baked in cakes or served on bread in a paté!
Newfoundlanders serve the traditional Jigg dinner for Thanksgiving dinner. This regional dish includes corned beef brisket, and peas pudding, which involves straining peas through cheesecloth!
In Alberta, the Ukrainian community will often use their turkey dinner leftovers to stuff perogies! Can you imagine turkey stuffing inside a perogi? Yum!
The colder weather is encouraging us inside. I hope you are able to find creative, fulfilling ways to spend meaningful time with loved ones this autumn.
All my very best,
