Abundance In A Box: The Philosophy of Giving Back
October is the month we say thanks, the month when farmers reap their harvest and the month we welcome fall. Inspired by the gratefulness this month brings, I would like to share a conversation I had with Robert Tham, a successful entrepreneur that puts gratitude as his priority.
First a huge congratulations to Robert, who is celebrating his 20th year of being clean and sober this October. Perseverance and commitment is what Robert strives at. He has been maintaining a daily gratitude journal for 13 years. Every morning he kisses and cuddles his wife before leaving their bed, then he takes the time to meditate before starting his day. After his meditation, Roberts sits with a cup of coffee and his gratitude journal where he records 5 things that he his grateful for. It could be that "wicked cup of coffee" he just whipped up, or his business partner and their staff whom he is so grateful for, or activities like kick boxing. These are simple things, yet they bring him joy. He said that when reflecting and recording this gratitude, puts him in a good mood. What a lovely way to kick start your day each morning! Diwali - The Festival of Lights Sunday, October 27
Growing up in Singapore, Diwali was something I looked forward to very much. It was celebrated with lots of fun and merriment. The preparation for Diwali was always well planned out at a least a month ahead. Preparation for Diwali included the cleaning and redecorating our home and purchasing new clothing. It is also a time when family and friends gather to celebrate with the exchange of traditional good wishes with my moms delicious chicken biryani, curries, baked biscuits and cakes. And of course celebrating included the light of diyas. Diwali celebrates victory of good over evil and light over darkness. Light, is the symbol of hope and positive energy. On this night people decorate their homes with diyas (earthen lamps with cotton wicks dipped in ghee or oil) thus spreading light in every corner of their homes. The significance of lighting the diyas is to destroy the reign of darkness and to help Lakshmi, goddess of prosperity and wealth to find her way into their homes. Mindy’s Reading Corner
This month I started reading Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell. The moment I picked it up I was hooked. I remember it was when the controversial story about the Canadian spy was floating around and it made this book the perfect read. Gladwell's narrative has given me a whole new perspective on getting to know strangers. Perhaps it's something to start over the Thanksgiving weekend!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Turkey, sweet potato and pumpkin pie. On this day of gratitude, I'm happy to be surrounded by friends like you! Let us all be grateful. All my very best,
