September Newsletter - The Mountains are Calling

One of my favourite sports is hiking. Being outside in the fresh air, the trees and the mountains helps me in more ways than I can imagine. The climb is my favourite part of the journey.

The two of them are seen hiking on a trail.

Hiking is a sport where every step you take requires concentration – is there a loose rock? Where is the next step? Whether it’s up or down, you need to pay attention. I am still trying to beat my best year of 52 hikes.

Mindy and Steve are photographed against a lovely backdrop of mountains and blue skies.

Here is a quote from ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’, as it relates to climbing in the mountains and many other activities we engage in.

"Mountains should be climbed with as little effort as possible and without desire. The reality of your own nature should determine the speed. If you become restless, speed up. If you become winded, slow down. You climb the mountain in an equilibrium between restlessness and exhaustion. Then, when you're no longer thinking ahead, each footstep isn't just a means to an end but a unique event in itself. This leaf has jagged edges. This rock looks loose. From this place the snow is less visible, even though closer. These are things you should notice anyway. To live only for some future goal is shallow. It's the sides of the mountain which sustain life, not the top. Here's where things grow.”

Mindy and Steve are seen against a backdrop of orange ground and vast expanses of land.

As we ease out of summer, September often feels like a fresh start, with renewed energy and focus.

Returning to our routines, either to the office in hybrid or full-time work arrangements, returning to school, or getting our children ready for a new school year, it’s a great time and opportunity to set new goals for the rest of the year.

Back to Work: September is the time to refocus, set new targets, start new projects, and establish new routines.

Back to School: There’s a mix of excitement and nerves as we adjust to new classes and new routines.

New Beginnings: September is an opportunity to reflect on our accomplishments and focus on what’s ahead. It’s a good time to reassess, set new intentions, take on a new project or start something completely new.

Return to Work

Whether it’s working in an office or at home, or a little bit of both, an organized work environment will reduce your stress and increase your productivity.

We lose hours if we are disorganized, so why not implement a system to streamline your workflow and improve your day?

Create a pleasant office environment that reflects your personality and interests without distraction. It would make it more appealing and pleasant, perhaps even inviting!

In the TV show “Suits” Harvey had a large duck painting on one wall of his office that was whimsical and meaningful to him, and his interest in basketball was apparent with the signed basketballs displayed along the window ledge. Although we may not have expansive offices or large walls for paintings like Harvey, it’s important to include meaningful items, messages or family photos to keep us balanced.

We have so much to be thankful for, and sharing that expression of joy is significant both for ourselves and for the recipient.

All my best,

Generous leadership is about leading with empathy, awareness, and a genuine intention to uplift others. Here's how body language, tone, presence, the power of "thank you" and the power of observation can play a role in this leadership style...
